The birth of a baby is a joyous occassion in the life of a husband and wife. However, sometimes the child birth process does not go as planned. Many times there is physician negligence involved during the birthing process. Eighty percent of all childbirths end up in some form of complication. A lot of trust is put into the medical team and sometimes they do not always make the right decisions. in many cases the result is cerebral palsy.

Spastic Cerebral Palsy and Athetoid Cerebral Palsy are two types of cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders characterized by loss of movement and/or loss of other nerve functions. These disorders are caused by injuries to the brain that occur during fetal development or near or at the time of birth. Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common form of cerebral palsy, affecting 70-80%, and Athetoid Cerebral Palsy leads to difficulty controlling and coordinating movement. Damage to the basal ganglia, in the midbrain, is usually what results in Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. [More]

HOW CAN CEREBRAL PALSY BE TREATED?
Once the disorder is identified, there are an ever-growing number of resources and programs, many of them government-funded.

The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in part provides for early intervention services across the country.

Physical therapy, speech therapy, and specialized play therapy are accepted modes of management that have replaced the less effective institutions of the past. Still, most parents will seek supplementary treatment from private facilities for their child. If medical negligence played any part in contributing to your child's disorder, the burden of these costs should not fall entirely on your shoulders.[More]

  • In general, cerebral palsy is a condition caused by restricted or delayed oxygen flow to the brain in the unborn or newborn baby. Severity depends upon the section of brain affected.

  • Specifically, the damage results from inadequate blood flow to the brain and/or inadequate concentrations of oxygen in brain tissue.

  • Other, less common factors can contribute to brain damage causes of cerebral palsy, such as unusual viruses, mother-child blood type conflict, or accidental head trauma.

  • This unfortunate disability is sometimes not preventable. However, mistreatment or poor diagnosis of pregnancy complications, or mishandling of the baby during birth, are often contributing factors that should have been prevented.
